5 Spiritual Causes of a Stiff Neck – Healing the Throat Chakra

SarahYip_SpiritualCausesStiffNeck

What are the metaphysical reasons for a stiff neck?

As someone who’s had sporadic neck pain for 17 years, I’ve tried many cures for muscle tension. Apart from external solutions like yoga, chiropractic treatments, heat packs, Magnesium supplements and Epsom Salt baths I’ve also looked at the spiritual causes of a stiff neck. Here are my findings.

A sore neck is the result of a congested Throat (5th) Chakra. This energy centre includes our Thyroid Gland, voice, ears, neck and throat. It responds well to sound healing, creative expression (e.g. journalling and singing), a healthy lifestyle and the colour blue.

It shuts down with criticism, overwork and too much processed foods (especially if they’re eaten or drink quickly – I’m inclined to include smoothies in this category!) Anything that overrides your natural desire for peace and quiet closes your Throat Chakra.

At any point in time, your chakras can be overactive, underactive or balanced.

An overactive Throat Chakra manifests as talking or gossip without action, i.e. ‘busyness’ without productivity. You’ll often find these people addicted to something, including the need for speed. They’ve forgotten that we’re human be-ings, not human do-ings.

An underactive Throat Chakra is linked to suppressed feelings, speech impediments and stagnation. People with an underactive Throat Chakra may cough a lot, which is a sign they’ve got something to say but can’t get it out (I find that a good scream or groan can shift this block – maybe try it in the car for privacy…) They may also feel cold, sluggish, overlooked and under-appreciated.

Ideally, we have a balanced Throat Chakra, whereby we say what we mean and listen equally to our inner voice and other people. We’re committed to learning, open-minded and excited by the unknown. Our voices sound musical and mellow rather than hoarse or timid. No wonder the word INTUITION adds to 5 in numerology, as does the word SNAKE (a creature known for its flexibility – the number 5 even looks quite snake-y!)

It’s beneficial for people with 5 lifepaths to pay attention to their Throat Chakras, as this is the part they are healing in themselves and others. Find your lifepath. If you’re in a 5 Personal Year or Month, it’s also wise to look after your Throat Chakra. Find your personal year.

5 Spiritual Causes of a Stiff Neck
1) Inflexibility
Physical stiffness can reflect mental rigidity. Where have you created a bottleneck? Maybe it’s time to ask for help, counselling, or a massage. The opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creativity. See the other person’s point of view.2) Watching instead of living “““““““`
Too much screen time (TV, computer, phone) and sitting down creates hip and neck tension. Try a yoga, dance, gym or meditation class to relieve stress. Walk more, worry less. Spend time in the garden, with children, animals or people-watching without checking the time.

3) Anger and resentment
You can be right or you can be happy. It’s your choice. Look up the Liver in Chinese Medicine, aka the seat of frustration or happiness. It loves exercise, laughter, moderation and acupuncture. I sometimes find a stiff neck linked to judgement of other people, especially addicts (alcohol, etc.) The term bottle neck has a dual meaning. I get sore neck and shoulder muscles after drinking alcohol, also possibly linked to the Liver Meridian.

4) A diet of negative energy
Substances like sugar and fried foods cause inflammation. Experiment with foods and spices to open your Throat Chakra. Use music or chanting to neutralise that inner critic. Cook more soups, broths and drink tea…slowly…Detox your feelings and reduce your exposure to bullies.

5) Something else!
There are other reasons you could have a stiff neck. It could be as simple as the wrong pillow, or as complex as a past life injury or forgiving your father. As the site of the inner & outer voice, your neck reflects how well you speak your truth. Be courageous!
