I Worked At The UN And All I Brought Back Was This Flag…

UN flag over wooden turtle

I worked at the UN in 2005 and this flag is almost all I brought back, apart from some amazing friendships. After 11 months as an expert on loan from the Australian Government, I burned out, from workplace bullying, gastro and lingering shock after the 2004 tsunami. My lifelong dream had come to an end. At 24, I had found my ideal job then had to exit for medical reasons. I was devastated. ⁣⁣⁣

When I look back, 14 years later, I can see my body knew what my mind denied – that a life of jetsetting, paperwork and infinite waiting was not my purpose. I was the kind of person who wore tie dye singlets under my suit. The hippy in me was wilting. As much as I loved helping to conserve marine turtles, I was barely making a dent. The odds were against me. ⁣⁣⁣

Yes, I could have applied for another placement (they suggested Africa, a 29/11 numerology place), but in my heart I was done with pretending. So I moved to Brisbane on a hunch, after meeting someone from there on a Bangkok train (she is a 29/11 lifepath like me). ⁣⁣⁣Find your lifepath

I had a feeling my future husband was in Queensland. It was tropical, had mangoes, a river, nice people…and I loved it from World Expo ’88, so what did I have to lose?!⁣⁣⁣

I got a job over the phone with an NGO and moved, after a brief rest in my hometown of Sydney (a 29/11 city). One of my first assignments was to judge the tourist and eco-friendless of all 40+ Gold Coast beaches (yes, really). I fell in love with Burleigh Heads (an 11 vibration place) at first sight. The husband took longer, but that’s for another post!

“It is more noble to give yourself completely to one individual than to labour diligently for the salvation of the masses”. Dag Hammarskjold, past Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Wish I’d read this quote earlier in life! What wisdom. Found it today in Steven R. Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He was a 22/4 Master Builder.
